Dryer Vent Error Codes by Brand

Most newer dryers have a sensor that watches how well air moves through the vent. When lint buildup, a crushed hose, or a stuck vent flap blocks that airflow, the dryer shows a code or a Check Vent light. Below are the vent-related codes for the major brands, what each one means, and what to do about it.

All of these codes are a warning, not a broken dryer. But a blocked vent means longer dry times, a hotter laundry room, extra wear on the dryer, and a real fire risk. The fix is getting air flowing again. If you're in Salt Lake or Utah County and the code keeps coming back, call or text (801) 999-0043.

LG dryers: d80, d90, d95

  1. d80: Airflow is about 80% restricted. Loads start taking longer to dry. Time to schedule a vent cleaning.

  2. d90: About 90% restricted. Expect long dry times, a hot laundry room, and extra strain on the dryer.

  3. d95: About 95% restricted. The vent is close to fully blocked. Get it cleared as soon as you can.

Samsung dryers: Clg, C80, C90

Clg or Cg: The vent is clogged.

C80 or C8: About 80% of the vent is blocked.

C90 or C9: 90% or more of the vent is blocked.

tS, tC, tE, hE or HC: These are overheating codes. Samsung says the most common cause is a clogged lint screen or vent trapping heat in the dryer. If your vent is clear and the code stays, it's a repair issue, not a vent issue.

Whirlpool, Maytag and KitchenAid: AF and Check Vent

AF (restricted airflow) or a lit Check Vent indicator means the lint screen or vent is clogged, or the vent is crushed, kinked, or has too many turns. The dryer keeps running, but loads take longer and the dryer works harder. If the message won't clear, Whirlpool recommends calling a venting professional.

GE dryers: Check Vent

The Check Vent light means the dryer's vent sensor sees low airflow. GE recommends checking and cleaning the vent as soon as possible, and cleaning it at least once a year.

Kenmore, Frigidaire and other brands

Kenmore dryers are built by other manufacturers, so they often use the same codes as the LG or Whirlpool models they're based on. Frigidaire and Electrolux don't have a dedicated vent code, but a clogged vent can contribute to heating codes like E64. Whatever brand you have, if the dryer runs hot or takes more than one cycle to dry, start with the checks below.

What you can check yourself

  • Clean the lint screen. Clear it before every load. If it looks coated, wash it with warm water and a soft brush.

  • Check the hose behind the dryer. Make sure it isn't crushed, kinked, or pinned flat against the wall.

  • Check the outside vent. With the dryer running, the flap should open all the way, with no lint packed around it.

When to call us

If the code comes back after all three checks, the blockage is inside the vent line in your walls, attic or roof. LG and Whirlpool both recommend calling a vent professional at that point, and that's exactly what we do. We run an air hose through the full line from the outside back to the dryer, pull the lint out through the exterior vent, check the dryer connection, and test airflow at the outside vent before we leave.

Pricing is flat: one price for vents that exit through a wall and one for vents that exit through the roof. The price we give you over the phone is the price you pay. No surprise add-ons.

Our guarantee

If we make a mistake, or you notice something wrong after we leave, we'll come back and fix it for free.

Also offered: Air duct cleaning. Many customers book both in the same visit.

Common questions

Can I keep using my dryer when it shows a vent code? It will usually still dry, but every load takes longer and the vent keeps filling up. Schedule a cleaning soon, and treat the highest levels (like LG d95 or Samsung C90) as urgent.

I cleaned the lint trap and the code is still there. Why? The lint screen only catches part of the lint. The rest builds up inside the duct. If the hose and outside flap look fine, the clog is in the vent line itself.

Why does my dryer keep getting these codes? Long vent runs and roof exits clog faster and restrict airflow more. They're common in newer Utah homes where the laundry room is far from an outside wall. Yearly cleaning keeps them clear.

My dryer is showing a different code. Can you help? Codes for the door, voltage, buttons, or motor aren't vent problems, and they need an appliance repair technician. If you're not sure, text us the code and your dryer brand, and we'll tell you whether it's something a vent cleaning will fix.
